Winter's near and for those seeking some quiet time away from the pressures of life, it's the season that best provides the opportunity to cosy up and relax while catching up on all the movies we were too busy to see the first time around.

And while high profile, star-studded, Oscar winning films may be your first choice, it pays not to overlook the rest. That's why we've made a list of the best films from 2011 (the ones that the Academy forgot).

No time for second rate cinema you say? Think again. After all, who would have thought that The Colour Purple, The Shawshank Redemption and Revolutionary Road could ever have missed out on an Oscar? And 2011 was no different.

Take a stroll through our sideshow, 13 great movies Oscar ignored and discover some of the lest celebrated but overwhelmingly deserving films of 2011; films to open your mind, warm your soul or even just help you relax this winter.
