We might not lie back and think of England, but some of us do think about the housework, unpaid bills, celebrities and food.

The 2012 Mega Kiwi Sex Survey has revealed New Zealanders, on average, have sex about 130 times a year, but people in Tauranga, Gisborne, Palmerston North and Whanganui are getting more than most.

One in three Kiwis say their favourite time to get down to business is the morning, and about 17 per cent of Whangarei residents like to pop out for a lunchtime quickie.

The survey of 1500 people found Kiwi women rate themselves more highly in bed than men, with 29 per cent of women confident their skills are excellent, compared to 25 per cent of their male counterparts.

A third of people who aren't sexually satisfied say they're having great sex, but they're just not having enough of it.

However, about one in 10 people don't think the sex they're having is up to scratch, which could explain why some Kiwis' minds are elsewhere.

The survey found 13 per cent of New Zealanders have thought about housework during sex, while 14.5 per cent have thought about bills that need paying.

About 15 per cent of people have thought about food or a celebrity.

Hastings is New Zealand's most sexually satisfied place, with Gisborne the least satisfied.

People who are in a relationship are the most happy with their sex life, while unemployed people are more sexually satisfied than those who work.

The survey found women have, on average, had eight sexual partners, while men have had six.
