Doctors have found a young boy in China believed to have no eyes actually has an eyeball hidden underneath his skin.

Marwanijun has been shining a flashlight over the smooth skin where his left eye should be since he was eight months old, his father Madamihan said.

Medical experts at the Army 474 Hospital in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, told the toddler's parents the reason he loved the torch was because he had a left eye sitting under the skin, but it was too sensitive to ever be exposed.

The boy’s 26-year-old parents, father Madamihan and mother Salamu, took him from their small community to the hospital in the hope surgery would give him the ability to see.

"He is eager to see light, and we pray everyday that he could see the light," his father said.

But doctors say the young boy is not suitable for surgery because his eye has no lens and will not be able to see if exposed.

He may be able to get an artificial eye once he reaches the age of 16.
