Want to try a new class at the gym? Take the plunge with these top tips from fitness expert Judi Mead.

Check it out first: Come and look at the class beforehand, if you’re feeling apprehensive. “See what’s going on in the room and know what you’re signing up for. Some of the studios have glass windows at the back, so you don’t even have to come in!”

Dress the part: Turn up to the class wearing suitable, comfortable clothing. “Get some decent runners and make sure your clothing is appropriate. I’ve had people turn up to do spin classes in jandals! And they had a terrible time.”

Bring a friend: “I recommend people wanting to get into new classes take a friend or a family member. Rocking up with someone you know makes for a more relaxed experience.”

Don’t try to blend in: “It’s important to put your hand up and identify yourself as a new person, particularly in the more popular classes. Good instructors will always give slightly easier options during the class that you can take, if needed.”
