What should I drink after a workout?

Question: I am new to exercise and have gotten myself a personal trainer. She has recently been telling me that sports drinks are better to drink post workout than water. Is this correct?

Answer: If you are working out moderately at the gym for about an hour and are well-fuelled before and after your workout, there is no reason to drink a sports drink. In fact, the extra calories and sugar in the sports drink may do you a disservice, especially if your goal is weight loss! Instead drink water before, during and after your workout.

What’s important is that you have a light snack immediately after your workout, especially if you can’t eat a main meal within the first hour after your workout. A snack that contains both good quality carbohydrate and protein is best. Try a pottle of yoghurt and a handful of almonds, or a banana and a glass of low-fat trim milk.

Remember, if you are a recreational gym goer, water is always best!
