Are you curious about the state of your health? It’s written all over your face.
Sparse eyebrows
Could be: An underactive thyroid
Signs you may have an underactive thyroid include feeling lethargic, being sensitive to the cold, having coarse hair or unexplained weight gain. “It can be detected with a blood test and treated with thyroid tablets,” says Dr Vivienne Whitechurch, a GP and women’s health expert.
Cracked mouth corners
Could be: Nutritional deficiency
“It’s linked to iron, vitamin B and zinc deficiencies and can be worsened by licking your lips, which transfers bacteria and thrush from the mouth,” says Dr Cathy Reid of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. This can be treated with an anti-fungal cream.
Yellow eyelid lumps
Could be: High cholesterol
“Yellow plaques on the eyelids are deposits of cholesterol, often indicating high cholesterol levels,” says Whitechurch. A healthy lifestyle and, if required, medication, can reduce their appearance. Topical peels, and surgical and laser removal, are also options.
Dark under-eye circles
Could be: Nasal congestion, allergies or eczema
“An antihistamine can help in the case of allergies and eczema, as will a nasal decongestant for congestion,” says Reid. Excess pigmentation from sun exposure is another culprit – wear sunscreen daily to prevent further pigmentation.
